📜 Origin

The phrase grew out of the older slang verb “hit up," which by the early-to-mid 20th century meant to approach someone to ask for something, like money or a favor (“he hit me up for a loan"). By the late 20th century, especially in American youth and hip-hop slang, “hit me up" shifted toward its friendlier modern meaning of simply getting in touch. Pagers, cell phones, and later texting and social media made it even more popular, and it's now a casual staple of everyday English. Its exact path from “asking for something" to “contact me" is hard to pin down, so the timeline is a bit fuzzy.
