🙅🏻 There Is No Safety School Anymore 💣

Every family walks in with the same list logic: a couple of reaches, a couple of matches, and a “safety”—usually the state flagship—to fall back on if the reaches don’t work out.

That logic is outdated.

UCLA’s overall admit rate has hovered around 9% in recent cycles—lower than several Ivy League schools. For out-of-state applicants and anyone applying into an impacted major, flagships like UCLA, UNC, and Michigan aren’t a backup plan anymore. They’re some of the hardest admits on the list.

Here’s what changed: enrollment caps didn’t grow, but the applicant pool did—more students, more transcripts, more 4.0s, all applying to the same twenty schools everyone’s heard of. Add in the Common App and the Coalition making it easier than ever to apply to more places with less friction, and you get flagships receiving reach-school volumes of applications for match-school and safety-school seats. A “safety” only works if it’s actually less competitive than your reaches. For a lot of students right now, it isn’t.

This isn’t just a testing or list-building problem; it changes the whole strategy conversation. Students can no longer treat their essays and activities as something they “save the real effort for” on the reach applications. If the flagship you’re applying to in-state or out-of-state is admitting at single digits for your intended major, that application needs the same care as your Ivy reach. The old hierarchy—polish the top of the list, coast on the bottom—doesn’t hold anymore.

So what do you do instead?

1️⃣ Build the list around fit and admit rate, not name recognition. A true safety school is one where a student’s academic profile sits comfortably above the middle 50% of admitted students—not a school that simply sounds less prestigious than Berkeley or UVA.

2️⃣ Look regionally. Plenty of excellent universities outside the “familiar twenty” offer strong programs, real merit aid, and admit rates that actually behave like safeties. Some of the best outcomes I've seen come from students who found a genuine home at a school their friends had never heard of.

3️⃣ Apply to more schools in the match and safety tiers, not fewer. If everyone’s reach list is getting harder, your list needs more depth where the odds are actually in your favor. And treat every single one of those applications—essays included—like it matters. Because it does.

The families who get this right aren’t the ones chasing brand names all the way down the list. They’re the ones who build a list where every single school is one their kid would be genuinely excited to attend—because there’s no guarantee anymore that the “safe” choice is actually safe.
